Hair Trends for 2017

2016 has been a year filled with with many surprises (both good and bad), but at this time of year it’s important to live in the moment and be present with your friends and family during the holiday season. However, since 2017 is just around the corner it never hurts to start looking ahead and planning for the year to come.

When it comes to hair trends there are already some things that you may want to consider to be a trendsetter in 2017, and they include:

Glitter Roots
Glitter is good. But let’s be honest—too much glitter is a huge problem. That’s why glitter roots have a special place in our hearts. It’s like a party without all the drama. For the best effect, pair with double-braids or -buns.

Side Braid
The side braid is the tour de force of braids. It’s elevated but with a hint of casual, making it the best look for almost every occasion.

The Lob
We’ve said it a million times, but this year was practically buck wild with lobs. And there’s more than one way to wear them. From layered and wispy to blunt and two-toned, lobs were the real MVP’s of 2016.”

For the best in these styles and many others make sure to visit Caralyn’s, your Ottawa hair design specialist.

Hairstyles for Autumn Weddings

Autumn tends to be a favourite month for many (and for good reason): the weather is usually comfortably cool and the changing of the colour of the leaves is a true treat for the eyes. It is also a great time for weddings as the beautiful yellow, orange, red and brown make for beautiful backdrops for photos.

Summer weddings are always beautiful (as long as mother nature decides to cooperate with you on your big day) but Fall weddings have been steadily gaining in popularity over time. The dip in temperature can sometimes create challenges that wouldn’t necessarily exist during the summer, but also new opportunities that may not have been possible during the summer as well. The fall months are also a great time to try out some special hairstyles for the big day. Some of those styles in question include:

Bride/Bridesmaid updo – traditional updo style, but with some added flare from braiding parts of the hair.

Half up/half down style – this style includes a double braid and is a great choice for the cooler months as it provides the neck with some added warmth.

Floral hairpiece/hair clips– adding a floral hairpiece/hair clip not only looks great, but it helps ensure that everything stays in place, especially if it happens to be a windy day.

There are many other styles of which to choose from and it’s important to consider such factors as current length of hair and particular styles options that you think would best compliment you and your wedding attire. A consultation with your Ottawa hair stylist will ensure that you are able to get the right style for your big day.

Frequency of Hair Shampoing

In life there are a few age old questions: What is the meaning of life? What came first, the chicken or the egg? Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? Another important question to add to that list is: how often should the average person shampoo their hair? This question is can be difficult to answer because it depends on several different factors.

“Shampoo traps oils, so if you do it too frequently, you may dry your hair out, leaving it prone to breakage, says Angela Lamb, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. ‘Hair produces natural oil called sebum, and shampoo is an emulsifier that captures and traps excess oil, dirt, and product residue, which you then rinse out to clean the hair,’ Lamb says. For the most part, some dirt is OK and natural — and you definitely want some oils to remain in your hair.” But, what about those who feel the need to shampoo their hair every single day? Is that excessive? Once again, it truly depends on certain factors. “The experts agree: Only a small group needs to shampoo daily, like those with very fine hair, someone who exercises a lot (and sweats), or someone living in very humid place, Carolyn Goh (Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA) says. ‘If you have oily scalp, then daily washing is needed,’ she explains. ‘Sometimes, people think they have dry scalp because they have dandruff, but in those situations, more frequent washing is also helpful.’”

When it comes to hair, the idea of cleanliness and health isn’t necessarily linked to daily shampooing, however if that is something which you’re accustomed to and feel comfortable doing you should never be shamed for it. Regardless of how often you shampoo for whatever reason make sure to visit your Ottawa hair stylist regularly to keep your hair looking and feeling its best.

The ‘Man-Bun’

Over time hairstyles come, go, come back again, get twisted, remixed and blur gender lines. The best part about all of this? They always stay interesting and worth talking about. The most talked about style over the past little while has most definitely been the ‘man-bun’.

Whether you’re a fan of the style or not it has definitely made quite the impact on the hair industry and popular culture as a whole. If you’re a man with long hair it provides a way in which to wear it that is not only stylish but can keep the hairs from out of your face. This particular hairstyle has become rather influential. “Man-bun mania has spread to everything from Halloween costumes to 70,000-follower-strong Instagram accounts and tongue-in-cheek memes featuring joke du jour, Donald Trump. But over the last six months, something has shifted. Almost overnight, the trend swapped hands. Or should we say, heads. Style savvy women everywhere are reclaiming the look. Out of nowhere, the fem-bun appeared.”

The fact that this bun style is one that both men and women can rock is pretty incredible. Regardless of how you may feel about the particular style, it appears as if it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. If your hair is the appropriate length and you want to give this style a try, make sure to consult with your Ottawa hair stylist as they will be able to provide you with the right styling techniques to ensure your bun is the best it can be!
