Perfect Hair for a Perfect Day

Your wedding should be spent enjoying your day and the people around you, not worrying if your hairstyle is still in place. The day of your wedding will be a long one, and all precautions for effortless beauty care should be taken care of! As professional hairstylists, we request a few steps to be taken prior to the hairstyling to ensure a long lasting and beautiful style! They include:

Day 2 Hair: While this may be arguable, day 2 hair actually holds style much better. Just-washed hair can hold too much moisture and bounce to fully handle any heat styling that will last. After washing, be sure to leave your hair natural and avoid heat treatments, since it can be difficult to reverse the effects of already heat-styled hair.

Product Free: Depending on your hair style, products may be used to keep the look in place such as hairsprays, gels or molding cremes. Coming in with a fully natural head of hair will make it a clean slate for any styling without any danger of over using products.

Pictures: A photo speaks a thousand words, and we want to know exactly what you picture for your special look. Coming in prepared will make the process much smoother and faster, so we recommend bringing in as many photos of inspiration as you can, so we can give you the desired look.

We want you to look and feel your best on your special day! With proper hair care you can spend the day hassle-free (at least regarding your hair)! Let Caralyn’s, your hair experts, style your look for your wedding!

Short and Sweet

Going bold and taking a risk with your hair is definitely something everyone should do at least once, and what better way than to chop it off? More and more we are seeing shorter hair cuts for women come into style- take a look at Kim kardashian who chopped off her long locks for the sleek bob. Going short does not always have to be to the extreme buzz cut such as Cara Delevingne’s look. The most popular looks we’ve been seeing are:

Lob: The lob is officially everywhere! This look is a cross between long hair and a bob – the perfect medium length. This style looks good virtually every way, with big curls or pin straight locks. Shoulder length hair is no longer a length to dread, but embrace as one of the seasons hottest styles!

Inbetweenie: As you may notice, in-between lengths are a trending style, as they tend to be less high maintenance and more relaxed looks. The “inbetweenie” is referring to the grow-out length between a short pixie cut and a bob. This look can be styled in multiple ways, with shaggy bangs or tucked behind the ears. This look can be done up in so many ways and always looks put together.

Slick: Medium or short length, slicking back the hair is a go to, with either a gelled look or simply tucked behind the ears. Slicking your hair back is a gender neutral hairstyle that will rock any look.

Synthetic or Real Hair Wigs?

We are big wig lovers! Wigs can change and enhance your look as much as you want, as well as provide confidence and self-esteem to anyone who’s in need! At Caralyn’s, we provide both synthetic and real hair wings, as well as styling and maintenance recommendations. If you are having trouble deciding which type is best for you, we provided a list of pros and cons for each:

Synthetic Wigs

Pros:

1) Holds style. Whether it gets wet, or it’s humid outside, those curls or bounce will stay!

2) Relatively low cost, meaning more options to buy more then one!

3) Easy maintenance, synthetic wigs requires very little daily care.

Cons:

1) High shine, which can look slightly unnatural.

2) Cannot change style or colour, since the fibres do not react well to heat or dye.

3) They do not last as long as human wigs.

Real Hair Wig

Pros:

1) You can style with heated hair tools, allowing you to change up the style daily.

2) Very realistic looking!

3) Versatility in colour, since dying the wig is no problem.

4) Last much longer then any other type of wig.

Cons:

1) Cost, real hair wigs are much higher in price.

2) High maintenance. Like real hair, the hair has to be styled, washed and conditioned often.

3) Delicate. Again, like real hair, you have to be careful with heat resistant spray and not damage the ends.

Wigs can change the lives of people for the better! Do your research before you invest in a wig, each will have different needs to suit each person and their personal schedule and abilities. For your wig needs, purchasing, styling and maintenance contact Caralyn’s, your hair experts!

Warmer Shades

As the weather warms, the dye jobs get lighter and lighter! Everyone loves a fresh, summery look for the warmer months – preferably something to compliment the tan. Blonde hues are always a favourite for the upcoming season, and it can be a big process! As professional hairdressers, we’ve seen a number of blonde-gone-wrong jobs, and we want everyone to avoid that bleachy mess! Here is how to go from the dark to light the RIGHT way:

Pick the right shade: Not every skin tone can fully compliment the platinum blonde look, so it’s so important to know your skin and which under-hues will suit the shade of blonde! For example, lighter skin tones may suit ashy, platinum blonde, while darker shades can be gorgeous with caramel, golden tones. Do your research!

Get healthy: Bleaching the hair can cause significant damage, especially if the hair already has heat or colour damage. Be prepared for dryer hair, and work on starting a healthier routine for your new blonde tresses. It may also be a good idea to get a fresh cut to rejuvenate the hair.

Start slow: Going blonde often can’t happen in one sitting…especially if your going from black or red! Start with full highlights and work your way up to a solid blonde. This can take up to three separate appointments.

Upkeep: As you may know, hair grows fast, and so will your roots. Be sure to do some upkeep, possibly 1-2 months on the roots depending on how fast your hair grows! Be sure to get lightening shampoos to keep the blonde shades in tact, and condition like crazy!

We know everyone can rock a blonde dye job, you just have to know how to do it right, and how to upkeep. Here at Caralyn’s, we are here for your full blonde treatment and any upkeep questions or services you may have!

Power Do’

Styling your hair is all about individuality and representing your self, why not make a statement? The Power Do’ is the next hottest thing when it comes to choosing your personal look. Think blunt edges and bold twists on the classic cuts and styles. These looks are going to make heads turn; here are some of our favourites:

Power Curl

The Power Curl

Shows such as Topshop Unique saw models sashay down the catwalk with 80s-inspired cool-girl curls. Don’t forget your ‘power parting’ with this style; the more extreme, the better.

Power Cross-over

The Power Crossover

Proof that power styles can also be ultra pretty, we fell head-over-heels for the structured crossover looks at Carolina Herrera.

Power Slick

The Power Slick

Wet look hair was everywhere during the SS17 shows. Slicked-back hair screams sexy while giving off a powerful vibe. It’s super easy to recreate, too.

Power Fringe

The Power Fringe

Fringes were short, sharp and fierce this season. It takes guts to chop your fringe to this length – hence this style exudes coolness and strength.

These looks are classic with a modern twist with the bold accents and details. Let your hair represent your confidence and strength with the help of Caralyn’s, your hair experts, and remember…You got the power!

Style is Eternal

What is that saying? “Fashion comes and goes, but style is eternal” –Yves Saint Laurent. Well, we could not agree more. Every season we are bombarded with brand new hairstyle trends, such as half shaved heads and man buns, and while we love trying new things, sometimes it’s good to stick to the classics. If you are someone who loves a solid look that you never have to worry about going out of style (and you know hair can take awhile to grow) we’ve created a list of the classic hairstyles that will always make you slay the hair game:

1) Beachy waves- effortless glam that looks good on everybody.

2) Soft layers-frames every face.
3) Blunt bangs-adds an edgy twist to any classic look.
4) Defined curls- a little extra body never hurt nobody.
5) Straight centre part- always sleek and sexy.

Take it from us..if you choose one of these hairstyles, you’ll be “in style” forever. To get these styles perfected, come in to Caralyn’s, your Ottawa hair design expert.

Wig It Out

Embrace a New Year and a new do. Wigs have finally earned their turn in the spotlight as a highly coveted fashion trend, thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner (an avid wig and extension promoter), or Lady Gaga (The queen of trendsetting). Wigs have become the perfect way to have an ever-changing look that includes fabulous hair every time.

Wigs provide the variety to change your look for virtually any event or style you’re going for. Who wouldn’t want the option to have long wavy mermaid hair one day, and a sleek bob the next? Here are some tips for keeping your wig (synthetic and human-hair) in tip-top shape:

1) Detangle before washing.

2) Rinse with lukewarm water from roots to end.

3) Carefully shampoo with hands.

4) For synthetic wig, spray leave in conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. For human hair, condition ends and leave in for a few minutes.

5) Rinse with lukewarm water in the same direction as the hair to avoid tangles.

6) Air dry synthetic hair. Blow dry 80% of human hair wigs and round brush the rest.

So, if you feel like being a blonde Friday night, style that wig and go for it! For full service and care on synthetic and human hair wigs, visit Caralyn’s, your Ottawa hair design specialist!

Hair Trends for 2017

glitter-roots-hair-trend

2016 has been a year filled with with many surprises (both good and bad), but at this time of year it’s important to live in the moment and be present with your friends and family during the holiday season. However, since 2017 is just around the corner it never hurts to start looking ahead and planning for the year to come.

When it comes to hair trends there are already some things that you may want to consider to be a trendsetter in 2017, and they include:

Glitter Roots
Glitter is good. But let’s be honest—too much glitter is a huge problem. That’s why glitter roots have a special place in our hearts. It’s like a party without all the drama. For the best effect, pair with double-braids or -buns.

Side Braid
The side braid is the tour de force of braids. It’s elevated but with a hint of casual, making it the best look for almost every occasion.

The Lob
We’ve said it a million times, but this year was practically buck wild with lobs. And there’s more than one way to wear them. From layered and wispy to blunt and two-toned, lobs were the real MVP’s of 2016.”

For the best in these styles and many others make sure to visit Caralyn’s, your Ottawa hair design specialist.

Hair Tips Not to Brush Off

We tend to get caught up in only putting our focus toward the steps necessary to achieve something; outlining a plan and following it explicitly is the usual course of action. However, sometimes knowing what not to do is just as important as what to do itself. In fact, in can help to streamline the overall process in order to reach your achievement that much faster.

When it comes to hair styling and maintaining your hair, regularly visiting your Ottawa hair stylist should always be a part of your regimen, but you’d be surprised what a top hairstylist has recommended shouldn’t be. “According to power hairdresser George Northwood, we’re actually shooting ourselves in the foot by brushing our hair. Speaking to Vogue , George explained his reasoning.
‘Never, ever brush in the morning. For one thing it leads to frizz, and secondly, there’s always an element of mechanical damage. Use your fingers and you’ll be able to feel out any tangles’.”

He also suggests to “Sleep with your hair in a bun at the nape of you neck, pinned to keep it secure.
Then, when you take it out in the morning you should simply work a little oil through it and run a brush over it just the once.”
Of course, everything is ultimately dependent on many factors ,with the main one being your particular hair type. At Caralyn’s we’ll give your hair and scalp a thorough assessment in order to determine the best way to keep your hair looking and feeling it’s best.

What your Hairstylist Wants You to Know

When it comes to businesses and their respective consumers, the ways in which each particular group thinks can vary, which can sometimes cause challenges between the groups. In order to facilitate the best type of communication and get everyone on the same page, it’s nice to know how the other group thinks and try to do things with their perspective in mind.

When it comes to the world of hair styling and design, what a client wants and the final product they receive can vary greatly because of many factors. If a client brought in an image of their favourite celebrity’s hairstyle that they wanted replicated for them, they may not be happy with the end result due to differences in face shape, hair texture, etc.. The stylist would then have to create a variation of that style that would best suit the client in order to create a styled look that works.

Here are some other things (straight from different stylists themselves) about different things which can occur in the salon:

“Is texting during a hair appointment okay?

Tran: I personally don’t mind texting!

Abrio: Being on the phone texting during an appointment is such a common thing now. I think if you’re in the middle of a conversation, it’s rude, but if it’s not affecting the stylist and their work, it’s fine.

Stenson: If the client is the one texting, my policy is that it’s his/her time to do with what they will—as long as it doesn’t interfere with the cutting/styling process.

Monzon: Texting and cell phone usage has changed the way hairdressers work. Timing is important. For example, if you’re getting color applied, most likely it’s fine. If you’re getting a sharp, one-length haircut where the balance is important, then it’s definitely not a good time to be chatting or texting. But being in the salon, you should use the time to unplug, relax, and enjoy the experience of being taken care of.

What should a client do if they are unhappy with your cut or style?

Tran: It differs from person to person and how big of a change they are making, but telling me immediately so I can fix the problem is usually best.

Abrio: If a client is unhappy with their service they should definitely speak up. Even if a client calls up two weeks later, they should feel comfortable calling and speaking up. Trust me, we’d rather make you happy than lose you as a client… most of the time.

Stenson: If clients aren’t happy, I’d advise them to speak up immediately so the issue can be resolved. Clients should never leave the salon unhappy.

Monzon: A client being unhappy is a very unfortunate situation; this is why references and inspiration pictures are very important. Also being very upfront about the past history of your hair is very, very important, especially when it comes to chemical services.”

Ultimately the most important thing is for both parties to be mindful of each other in order to facilitate the best experience possible.
