Perfect Hair for a Perfect Day

Your wedding should be spent enjoying your day and the people around you, not worrying if your hairstyle is still in place. The day of your wedding will be a long one, and all precautions for effortless beauty care should be taken care of! As professional hairstylists, we request a few steps to be taken prior to the hairstyling to ensure a long lasting and beautiful style! They include:

Day 2 Hair: While this may be arguable, day 2 hair actually holds style much better. Just-washed hair can hold too much moisture and bounce to fully handle any heat styling that will last. After washing, be sure to leave your hair natural and avoid heat treatments, since it can be difficult to reverse the effects of already heat-styled hair.

Product Free: Depending on your hair style, products may be used to keep the look in place such as hairsprays, gels or molding cremes. Coming in with a fully natural head of hair will make it a clean slate for any styling without any danger of over using products.

Pictures: A photo speaks a thousand words, and we want to know exactly what you picture for your special look. Coming in prepared will make the process much smoother and faster, so we recommend bringing in as many photos of inspiration as you can, so we can give you the desired look.

We want you to look and feel your best on your special day! With proper hair care you can spend the day hassle-free (at least regarding your hair)! Let Caralyn’s, your hair experts, style your look for your wedding!

Short and Sweet

Going bold and taking a risk with your hair is definitely something everyone should do at least once, and what better way than to chop it off? More and more we are seeing shorter hair cuts for women come into style- take a look at Kim kardashian who chopped off her long locks for the sleek bob. Going short does not always have to be to the extreme buzz cut such as Cara Delevingne’s look. The most popular looks we’ve been seeing are:

Lob: The lob is officially everywhere! This look is a cross between long hair and a bob – the perfect medium length. This style looks good virtually every way, with big curls or pin straight locks. Shoulder length hair is no longer a length to dread, but embrace as one of the seasons hottest styles!

Inbetweenie: As you may notice, in-between lengths are a trending style, as they tend to be less high maintenance and more relaxed looks. The “inbetweenie” is referring to the grow-out length between a short pixie cut and a bob. This look can be styled in multiple ways, with shaggy bangs or tucked behind the ears. This look can be done up in so many ways and always looks put together.

Slick: Medium or short length, slicking back the hair is a go to, with either a gelled look or simply tucked behind the ears. Slicking your hair back is a gender neutral hairstyle that will rock any look.

Make a change this season and go short! For a fresh start with your hair and style contact Caralyn’s, your hair design experts.

How to Care for Your Dyed Hair

Dying your hair is always fun and exciting, as well as a real commitment! The spectrum of colours is just waiting for your hair to embrace, whether you want purple or green, we say do it! You want to be sure once you’ve invested the time and money to get that perfect colour, that it stays properly maintained. That may mean coming in every three months for touch-ups, but there are also many precautions you can take at home to ensure that vibrant colour stays long lasting:

  • Shampoos less. Shampoo can strip the colour and natural oils from the hair. Instead, try to wash your hair between 2-3 times a week. When you do use Shampoo, be sure to purchase the hair colour protection brands.
  • Use less heat on coloured hair when styling, as it is more susceptible to damage. When you do style your hair make sure to use a heat protectant. This also goes for showering; try to rinse your hair with cool water instead of hot.
  • Condition like crazy! Conditioner will lock in the moisture to your treated hair and help retain the colour longer. Before going to bed apply leave-in conditioners as well as applying a deep conditioner mask to your hair weekly.

Follow these simple steps for perfectly vibrant hair between each touch up! At Caralyn’s, you hair experts, we believe in using your hair to express yourself, and absolutely love a fun colour job any day!

Beat the Bed Head

Maybe you just got a fresh new blowout, or spent hours perfectly curling your hair, either way, you want to make sure all that time and effort lasts longer then a day! The number one cause for ruining a hairstyle is by not properly caring for it during the sleepy-time hours. Depending on the look or hair type you have there are different ways you should care for your do’ over night, as well as general tips for sleeping.

  • The first recommendation is purchasing silk pillowcases. Silk pillowcases may seem like an unnecessary luxury, but the improvements it will make on your hair will totally be worth it. Cotton pillowcases can strip moisture from the hair while also causing breakage from hair tangling in the fibers while you toss and turn….Also you will feel super glamorous sleeping on silk.

A side note for silk pillowcases: If you just got a new style done and you want to make it last over night, wrapping your hair loosely in a silk scarf will keep in in tack for the morning after.

  • Condition! This may be a given, but applying leave-in conditioner to your locks over night will ensure smooth, radiant hair in the morning!

If you just got a blowout: Applying a small amount of oil treatment over your hair will keep it’s moisture and ensure sleekness for days to come.

  • Put it up! Leaving your hair free while you sleep can be a recipe for disaster. Properly putting up your hair will save its body and definition. Be wary though, putting it in a pony tail will not do it justice, as you will have elastic indents in the morning. To properly pin up your hair set it up in loose curls atop your head using bobby pins or clips.

Don’t just sleep it off, make sure you care for your hair even during the lights out hours. To get a new hairstyle that is worth the care, come to Caralyn’s, your hair experts, as well as proper hair maintenance products and tips.

1) Highlights to hide crow’s feet: light flushes of highlights are a great way to brighten facial features, and take the emphasis of lines or wrinkles!

2) Thickening cut to fill out face: Thickening the hair can be a youthful look that accentuates the jaw line and adds body to your style.

3) Bob: The bob is an amazing haircut to liven up a look. Forget the drab shoulder length style that’s been weighing you down and add some angles to make your face more symmetrical!

4) Waves or Curls: Adding waves to a haircut will add volume and body to your hair.

Baby Blonde

You can feel it in the air…the weather Is warmer and a change is coming! Maybe your hair needs a change too? A new colour is a sure-fire way to give your look the fresh boost it needs, and add that level of confidence for a new season. Here are the spring’s hottest hair colour trends to try out, P.S we’re spying a lot of blonde:

Pastel: These gorgeous shades are absolutely perfect for the spring…hello Easter egg vibes! The trend for pastels have tended to lean towards pinks and purples in the past, but this time around anything goes! Think Kanye, with his pastel green, or a cool blue. These shades also go amazing with any skin tone, so get creative and go full on colour!

Baby Blonde: This is a super fresh way to do blonde! Relevant to the name, it’s what you would relate to baby doll hair, with lighter than your norm blonde highlights, and a slight yellow undertone.

Strawberry Blonde: Think back to our Instagram post about the colour trend “Blorange”, this is along those lines! A warm mix of blondes and pastel tones for the new season.

These colours are so gorgeous for the spring and we definitely recommend giving them a go! If you are not one for going blonde, chestnut hues, and ombres are still going strong! For your new colour, contact Caralyn’s, your hair experts!

Power Curl

The Power Curl

Shows such as Topshop Unique saw models sashay down the catwalk with 80s-inspired cool-girl curls. Don’t forget your ‘power parting’ with this style; the more extreme, the better.

Power Cross-over

The Power Crossover

Proof that power styles can also be ultra pretty, we fell head-over-heels for the structured crossover looks at Carolina Herrera.

Power Slick

The Power Slick

Wet look hair was everywhere during the SS17 shows. Slicked-back hair screams sexy while giving off a powerful vibe. It’s super easy to recreate, too.

Power Fringe

The Power Fringe

To Wash, or Not to Wash?

Washing your hair seems like a given when it comes to maintaining your hair health, yet we keep hearing about people who have given up washing their hair completely…Crazy right? Turns out, the less you wash your hair the less you’ll have to. Over time, the scalp will stop producing as much oil as it would when it is completely stripped of the natural oils from Shampoos. This to say, everybody has different needs when it comes to shampooing depending on their hair type:

1.Thin, Fine Hair

Fine hair can easily feel weighed down by too much oil. To make sure your fine hair is always looking at its best, wash your hair every day to every other day.

2. Thick, Straight Hair

Thick, straight hair can usually start to look oily on the second or third day. Wash your hair with a system that helps moisturize and give shine without the weigh-down.

3. Thick, Wavy Hair

Wavy hair is usually a bit drier than straight hair. A good rule of thumb for wavy hair is to use a system that enhances your natural texture while adding a bit of moisture so it doesn’t frizz out.

4. Curly Hair

Curly hair is the driest of all the different hair types. Because of its spirals, oil from the scalp can’t work its way down, leaving the ends drier than straighter hair types. Depending on just how curly your hair is, you may not need to fully shampoo your hair as often.

5. Damaged Hair

For severely damaged hair, your locks can use all the moisture it can handle. Avoid further drying and stressing damaged hair out by washing as infrequently as you can manage, or when your locks start to look and feel greasy.

Get to know your hair type so you can properly care for it the best you can…and even possibly skip out on the shampoo hassle every once and awhile! For all your hair care needs, contact Caralyn’s, your hair experts.

Everything Old is New Again

We’ve been noticing this more and more…everything old is becoming new again, especially when it comes to hairstyles. As one can see in our most recent Instagram posts, we love bringing back the old with a bangin’ new twist! We know Cher hair and the 90’s grunge half knot has gained popularity, but what about our guy cuts? Turns out the throwback cuts are back for gentlemen as well, these are some of our favs:

Texture on Top: “In 2017, we’ll see men keeping the sides of their hair short and creating the top as the main focal point, embracing longer, more textured styles on top,” says Stelios Nicolaou, Aveda’s master barber.

Long Cuts: “We’re going to continue to see longer hairstyles take prominence among men, as catwalks hint heavily towards ‘Mick Jagger’ swagger,” says Alex Glover, master barber at Murdock at Hackett King Street.

Ultimate Throwback Cut: Part of this revival is the divisive centre-parting. “Parted brow-length fringes are already coming into high demand,” says Glover. Think less Nick Carter, more The Mummy-era Brendan Fraser.

Colour: If you’re looking for something that leaves an impression, but helps you keep your job, try getting your hair bleached – either white blonde or a more grungy, Kurt Cobain-inspired straw blonde.

So if you dig the vintage look, whatever era, you are sure to be “in stye”. Contact Caralyn’s, your hair design experts, to get any of these old yet new styles perfected!

Brushing Basics

Who would have thought there was a wrong way to brush your hair? Brushing your hair may seem like a daily, trivial part of your beauty routine, but when not done properly, it can lead to some serious long-term hair damage…uh oh. While there are techniques to proper brushing, there are also specified hairbrushes for different types of hair and styling.

When it comes to the actual action of brushing your hair here are steps one should follow:

  • Never brush from room to tip: Detangle the ends first then do smooth brush strokes throughout.
  • Do not brush when wet: Hair is weaker and breaks off easier.
  • Using the wrong brush: Surprise! The wrong brush will have negative effects on your hair due to the different fibres.

That leads us to what kind of brush one should use depending on their hair type:

Wavy or Straight hair: Paddle brushes

Frizzy hair: Ceramic and nylon round brush

Curly hair: Avoid brushes altogether or opt for a wide toothed comb

Know your hair type and know your brush! The proper brush and technique will keep your locks healthy and strong, what else could you ask for? For proper hair care and design, contact Caralyn’s, your hair design experts.
