Cancer and Hair Loss

Anagen Effluviuma is the loss of hair caused by chemicals or radiation. The most common occurrence is from certain types of chemotherapy or radiation that is given in the treatment of cancer. However, Anagen Effluvium can also be caused by exposure to toxic chemicals such as thallium and arsenic. The hair loss usually occurs suddenly, within one to three weeks after the exposure to the chemicals or radiation.

Chemotherapy, used in the treatment of cancer, destroys cancer cells in the body. It often destroys other cells which divide rapidly. Thus cancer patients can experience rapid shedding of 90 percent or more of all body hair. Any hair that remains is weak and breaks off easily. Hair loss from chemotherapy usually happens very suddenly. Hair may fall out in large clumps often overnight. Patients may wake to find large clumps of it on their bedding.

Anagen Effluvium is a temporary condition! In most cases, a person's hair returns to normal once the treatments are finished. Hair often seems to come back healthier, with different texture and even a different colour.

Not all drugs used in chemotherapy cause hair loss. The following drugs are most likely to do so. Amsacrine, Cisplatinum, Cytosine Arabinoside, Cyclophosphamide Cytoxin, Cyclophosphamide Cytoxin, Epirubici, Ifosfamide, Vincristine Oncovin. The following drugs are less likely to cause hair loss: Actinomycin, Bleomycins, Daunorubicin, Methotrexate, Carboplatin, Mitomycine C, Vinblastine.

For most people, hair loss affects their self-image and overall quality of life. It is one of the most difficult aspect of cancer treatment. Don't despair! Staff at Cancer Treatment Centres discuss hair loss and other possible side effects with patients before treatments begin. Ask questions about what to expect.

When patients are able to plan for hair loss, they generally choose a wig or hair replacement system before the treatment starts. They can get a good match with their own hair colour. They will also be prepared when they start to lose their hair. Patients have found this to be a good way to boost their self-confidence before, during and after treatment; in fact, until one's hair is fully grown back. Scarves and hats are also an option that one could consider for lounging around the house or at bedtime.

For many people wigs and hair replacement systems are often seen as natural alternatives to hair loss. They come in many styles using human hair or synthetic fibres and a wide variety of colours. However custom fitting and styling are essential to selecting one just right for you and for your peace of mind.
